Program Overview

The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in mathematics with a concentration in applied mathematics, as well as other areas of study.

The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver offers degrees and certificates at the undergraduate and graduate levels in mathematics, applied mathematics, data science, and statistics through coursework, research, and industrial collaboration. The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics offers foundational knowledge in both theoretical and applied mathematics and equips students with essential skills to build models, analyze data, and construct algorithms to help meet the demand for professionals who excel in solving problems and discovering patterns. The program offers optional concentration areas in applied mathematics, probability and statistics, or data science. The honors program offers high-achieving students the opportunity to challenge themselves academically and graduate with one of three levels of honors.

Math majors are well prepared to pursue careers in data science, biotechnology, actuarial sciences, engineering, finance, cyber security, and mathematics education. Many math majors also pursue graduate studies in business, law, medicine, mathematics or statistics.

Undergraduate students majoring in mathematics complete a minimum of 42 credit hours in mathematics and statistics and one computer programming course. Classes cover a broad range of mathematical topics, including numerical analysis, statistics, data science, graph theory, and operations research. A thriving and diverse community of approachable faculty and enthusiastic students offers many opportunities to get involved. Students can attend seminars, join the Math and Statistics Student Club, participate in undergraduate research projects, gain valuable work experience with an internship, help out other students by working in the Math and Stats Support Center (MASS) and outreach to local high schools, compete in international mathematical modeling contests, or just hang out with other students on the floor.

I spent more than a decade in the workforce between beginning my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado Denver. When I originally attended college, I majored in English, so switching to math was a big left turn. Before my first semester, I worried about whether I could succeed in my courses or fit into the academic community as a non-traditional student. From my freshman-level Calculus courses to the final semester of my degree, the Math department gave me the resources and education I needed to succeed and thrive.

I have found my professors knowledgeable, passionate, engaging, interested in, and respectful of the unique experiences my peers and I bring to their classrooms. I have rarely met such gifted and driven folks as my peers and mentors in the Math department. I explored topics that were meaningful and relevant to me both in and out of class through working as a research assistant and undergraduate learning assistant. I have felt fortunate to attend a university where undergraduate exploration and research is so clearly prioritized.

The hands-on experience with applied math and statistics that I got in my classes and as a research assistant made me realize that my passion lies in research. My undergraduate education gave me the foundation I needed to take the next steps toward that goal and apply to graduate programs. I am so glad that I took the chance and enrolled despite my early worries, as my time at CU Denver has completely changed my trajectory for the better.

I'm having a good time as a double major in mathematics and economics. I think it's because of the constant support from the mathematics/statistics department advisors. I want to become an actuary and even though University of Colorado Denver doesn't have actuarial science as a major, the CLAS advisors will always be able to help me achieve that goal.

I enrolled at the University of Colorado Denver in the Dual Major program of Economics and Applied Mathematics. During my college years, my concentration was on learning different programming languages, statistical tools, and economic theories that helped me with several projects and applications in real life.

I’m beyond thankful for all the courses related to Data Analytics, Statistics, Machine learning, and Regression Analysis/ Time Series I received in the Mathematical and Statistical Department. The knowledge I gained as a student is valuable since it fosters confidence, dedication, and logical reasoning to take the best approach and solve complex issues.

The unique blend of analytical and quantitative skills served me as a distinguished foundation for a highly competitive and demanding job market for science and technology. I sincerely express my gratitude to CU Denver since it taught me what I know about Data Science and made me find a brilliant career path.
