NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman recently got an up-close tour of Calgary’s upcoming arena, Scotia Place, during a visit with NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and Flames ownership. He walked away impressed by what he described as a project that’s farther along than it appears from the outside.
“From a distance, you might think only steel is visible, but there’s substantial interior work happening underground right now,” Bettman noted during a media briefing at the Flames’ current home, the Scotiabank Saddledome. He even admitted being surprised by the progress when he first approached the site and then by how much activity he found once inside.
Bettman also praised the planners’ diligence in learning from recent arena projects. “They’ve studied best practices in layout and amenities,” he said. The new venue will be roughly twice the size of the Saddledome, with more bathrooms and more overall conveniences. If Scotia Place does host 2028 World Cup games, Bettman believes Calgary will excel as a host city. He highlighted the city’s hospitality, passionate fan base, and status as a major tourist draw, pointing to events like the Stampede and his personal recollection of visiting Calgary for the 1988 Winter Olympics.
