At 48, Wicky arrives fresh off a successful stint with Swiss powerhouse BSC Young Boys (2022-2024), where he led the club to a historic Super League and Cup double in 2022-23. Under his guidance, Young Boys amassed a 51-17-20 record across all competitions, scoring 193 goals—an impressive 2.19 goals per game. His maiden season was nothing short of spectacular, clinching the Swiss Super League title with a 21-4-11 record and a 16-point lead. Basel’s 2017-18 UEFA Champions League run was historic, defeating Manchester United and Benfica in the group stage before narrowly exiting to Manchester City in the Round of 16—Switzerland’s best-ever Champions League performance.
Before coaching, Wicky had a stellar 16-year playing career, earning 75 caps for the Swiss National Team. He started every match at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and represented Switzerland in the 1996 and 2004 UEFA European Championships. As a defensive midfielder, he began with FC Sion, winning a Super League title and three Swiss Cups (1993-1997), before moving to Werder Bremen (1997-2000), where he lifted the 1999 DFB-Pokal. After a brief stint with Atletico Madrid, he spent six years at Hamburger SV (2001-2007), winning the 2003 DFL-Ligapokal, and later returned to Sion before retiring after a season with Chivas USA in 2008.
