While children in more affluent areas like Wharfedale are generally well-prepared, with 86% possessing the necessary skills, the story is vastly different in the city's most deprived neighborhoods. In areas like Low Moor, Tong, and Keighley West, only about half of the children are deemed school-ready.
The reasons behind this disparity are multifaceted. Prof Josie Dickerson, a BiB expert, sheds light on the challenges, including undiagnosed additional needs, a lack of basic self-care skills like toilet training and dressing, and the need for early intervention.
But there's hope. BiB's innovative approach, which connects data from health, education, and social care services, is making a difference. By identifying at-risk children and tailoring support, the project is helping 2,500 children in Bradford annually. Prof Dickerson believes this method could be a game-changer for other areas in England facing similar struggles.
