A Tale of Friendship and Horse Racing Legacy: The Unlikely Journey of Just Philtored and ZWP Stables
In a story that began with a chance encounter, Elliot Campbell, a 24-year-old Oklahoma native, found himself captivated by a photo of a horse hanging in a local GNC store. Little did he know, this moment would spark a lifelong passion and a unique connection to the world of horse racing.
The horse in the photo, Cherokee's Boy, was a Maryland-bred champion, and its owner, Dave Picarello, was one of the co-founders of ZWP Stable. Picarello's invitation to a race changed Campbell's life, leading him to become deeply involved in the world of horse racing and eventually take over ZWP Stables alongside his partner and trainer, Gary Capuano.
But here's where it gets controversial... The passing of Picarello in 2023 marked a turning point for ZWP Stables. Campbell, honoring their friend's legacy, stepped in to continue the stable's journey. And it was a journey that led to a significant milestone on December 6th, when their homebred Just Philtored won the Maryland Juvenile Filly Stakes at Laurel Park.
Just Philtored, a daughter of Great Notion, achieved her third stakes win, showcasing the talent and potential within ZWP Stables. But the real star of the story is Slow and Steady, the Malibu Moon mare who has been the backbone of their breeding program. Slow and Steady, at an impressive 25 years of age, is carrying her last foal, a testament to her enduring legacy.
And this is the part most people miss... Campbell's broodmare band, though small in number, has produced remarkable results. Slow and Steady has given birth to 12 runners, with their earnings surpassing $2 million. Her impact on the stable is undeniable, and Campbell hopes that her fillies, including the talented Malibu Beauty, will carry on her legacy.
Malibu Beauty, a multiple stakes winner and half-sister to Just Philtored, has earned close to $1 million during her career. Campbell and Capuano, who owned the mare in partnership, have high hopes for her offspring to continue the success story. Malibu Beauty will retire after the 2026 season and will be bred to Vekoma.
So, what's next for ZWP Stables? Campbell's horses will now race under London Reid Thoroughbreds, named after his sons' middle names.
